The Wardens and Vestry of Christ Church Greenwich are thrilled to announce that The Rev’d Marek Zabriskie has accepted our call to join us as the 10th Rector of Christ Church Greenwich. Marek’s start date will be November 4. Parishioners will be able to welcome and meet him at our Great Fall Gathering on September 16.
A powerful speaker and respected spiritual leader, Marek has served as Rector of St. Thomas Church, Whitemarsh in Fort Washington, PA, since 1995, during which time he greatly expanded that parish, grew its membership and ministries, and developed one of the strongest spiritual formation ministries for children, youth, and adults in the region. Prior to his time in PA, Marek served as the Associate Rector of St. James’s in Richmond, VA, and the Assistant to the Rector of St. George’s in Nashville, TN. Originally from Detroit, MI, Marek studied philosophy at Emory University and trained for the priesthood at Yale and Berkeley Divinity Schools. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1990.
Marek has published and edited several books, including The Bible Challenge, a popular study guide, with well over a million users worldwide, that helps people read the entire Bible in a year. He created the Center for Biblical Studies to promote The Bible Challenge nationally and globally.
He is also a member of the Compass Rose Society, which assists the Archbishop of Canterbury, and has been invited to preach throughout the United States and overseas, including at our own Faith on Fire series.
Marek has walked over 1,200 miles across Spain on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, to which he will return this September to co-lead a pilgrimage. He is actively involved in developing the Anglican Pilgrim Centre at Compostela. Next summer, Marek is scheduled to lead a pilgrimage to England and invites Christ Church Greenwich members to join him.
Marek and his wife, Mims, a partner at the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, have three daughters, Emily, Marguerite, and Isabelle, who are 31, 23, and 20, as well as an adorable Welsh Pembroke Corgi named Winston, who resembles a fox. Marek enjoys tennis, swimming, fly-fishing, reading, gardening, travel, and speaks Spanish, French, and Italian.
Marek shared, “I have been privileged to speak twice at Christ Church Greenwich and have known several parishioners for two decades. So, when I heard that Christ Church Greenwich was seeking a new Rector, I felt the Spirit speak deeply to me about this parish, which is a flagship of the Episcopal Church. I am deeply honored and thrilled to be called as your 10th Rector and look forward to meeting each parishioner and hearing about his or her spiritual journey, inviting each to invest more in that journey, come closer to, and invest in what God is doing in this amazing church. If we all do that, there is no limit to what God can do in and through this remarkable church.”
Senior Warden Randy Schwimmer is delighted: “Marek’s vision for Christ Church Greenwich reinforced our own in a phenomenal way. It was quickly clear to us that he is a dynamic priest who will lead us into an exciting future.”
After a thorough and extensive search process, the Vestry voted unanimously to invite Marek to be Christ Church Greenwich’s next rector. Abby Bates, co-chair of the Recruitment Team, said this, “This was a deeply spiritual process for us. Marek was a leading candidate for so many reasons, and when he led our team in worship, we felt that Marek was leading us with the Holy Spirit’s guiding presence, and we knew we had made the right choice.”
The Vestry is grateful to all who prayed and helped during this time of transition: the Rev’d John Branson, our Interim Rector, the Discernment Team led by Karen Royce and Lynne Jordal Martin, the Recruitment Team under the leadership of Abby Bates and Emily Ragsdale, the Hospitality Team chaired by Frankie Hollister and Susan Ness, and our Prayer Team guided by Mary Cattan and Tim Carpenter. We are also thankful to Bishop Ian Douglas, the Rev’d Lee Ann Tolzmann, Canon for Mission Leadership, and our diocesan consultant, the Rev’d Marissa Rohrbach.
Our Junior Warden, George Belshaw, is very pleased with the outcome of the transition process: “Marek is an excellent fit for Christ Church Greenwich in so many ways: he is pastoral, a powerful preacher, personable, passionate about spiritual leadership, and an accomplished leader. This is such an exciting time for our parish.”
