We had a great first full day in Winchester! We started off the day with a delicious breakfast prepared by the chefs at Winchester College and then headed off to the Undercroft to start rehearsal. The walk from the college to the cathedral is beautiful; we walk past lots of charming English houses and shops along the way. When we arrived, we began our first rehearsal for evensong. Today we rehearsed the Tomkins Preces and Responses, Sumsion Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, two Psalms, and Bainton’s And I Saw New a New Heaven. It was a lot of difficult singing, but we were determined to work hard for a great evensong! The sun came out just in time for lunch, so we sat outside and enjoyed our sandwiches, fruit, chips (“crisps”), and English candy bars.We then had some time to walk around the town. Our group went to a bookstore, Cath Kidston, and Tesco for Cadbury chocolate! After another brief afternoon rehearsal, we went back to Winchester College for a quick pitstop to change into our uniforms before evensong. Finally, we were able to go inside the cathedral! We put on our robes, practiced processing for an hour, and then began the service. Evensong was a great success and we are so proud! The college chefs prepared us a healthy meal of rice and chicken with a slice of chocolate cake for dessert (if you were fast enough to get a piece before it was gone!) We finished off the day with a game of “infection tag” at the nearby field. Our first full day was a blast and we can’t wait for more singing and FUN!
