Oversight of ongoing care and maintenance of 14 acres and 100,000 square feet of property of Christ Church Greenwich is undertaken faithfully by the Property Committee. Operating within a detailed categorized budget, we work together to enhance and protect the buildings and grounds which support the mission and ministries of our entire community at Christ Church.
The Property Committee has undertaken strategic projects in 2016 to extend beautification on campus following the completion of the Capital Campaign renovation efforts. Exterior repainting of the Chapel, repointing masonry at the fish wall, tree removals and pruning enhance the surrounding landscape. A new historical document case is due for installation with full return of images and documents to the Rectors’ Gallery. The Parish Hall, Nursery School and the Annex have repainting projects planned in sequence in upcoming years, worked within our annual budgeted funds.
Safety and security remain top priorities of the committee. Master rekeying is complete, and emergency lighting and alarm systems refined into full operation in 2016. Carriage House chimney replacement and Griffith Rd. repaired, Rectory and Tomes-Higgins painting have been addressed also. Parish Hall roof repairs, with creative installation of an owl serving to scare away invasive birds preventing future tears and leaks. Fire Lane milling and re-paving was our first step to address drainage, paving and pedestrian needs in the main parking area.
Craig Cecere’s introduction this year has allowed swift implementation of many needs of the Church facilities, bringing great benefit to our efforts. Identifying preferred vendors, re-evaluating large service contracts, and strategic prioritization utilizing Sodexo’s previous analysis of property needs is underway. We are able to focus on comparison of project bids, and respond to items Head Sexton Chuck Morrell supported by Sexton Mel Wilson raise through their ever watchful eyes on conditions needing address with reliable follow through. This is helping meet our goal of maintenance that preserves building material conditions, preventing expensive replacements as much as possible.
Finally, sales of newly identified gravesite plots have turned some of our focus to the Cemetery and Memorial Garden which are in need of landscaping renovations. Eric Rains, Landscape Architect, is under contract planning refinements and enhancements to the Cemetery grounds, with work beginning this Spring.
Many thanks to the members of the Property Committee for their tireless dedication and service: Katie Orphanos, Chair; Lynn Garelick, George Belshaw, Brian MacDonald, Chris Hackett, Carter Harris, Dick Hollister. With gratitude to our Staff Liaison, Craig Cecere, and our Wardens, Randy Schwimmer and Audrey Schaus.
