Jonathan Ryan, Associate Director of Music
Jonathan Ryan grew up in a musical family in Charlotte, NC. He began playing the organ at age 8, and, raised Presbyterian, discovered his passion for Anglican liturgy and music in high school. He then went on to study organ, conducting, and church music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music where he earned a BM with academic honors and MM respectively. During his studies at CIM, Jonathan served as assistant to his organ professor, Todd Wilson, at Cleveland’s Church of the Covenant. Jonathan additionally holds the highest ranking professional certification from the American Guild of Organists, the Fellow (FAGO), as well as the Choirmaster (ChM), certificates. He has previously served in director, conducting, and organist positions at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, IL, St. John Cantius Church in Chicago, IL, and St. James Cathedral in Chicago, IL.
At Christ Church, Jonathan directs the church’s adult choir, the Christ Church Singers, regularly works with the Choir of Men & Boys and the Girls Choir, oversees the music department’s teen Choir Assistants, and shares organ playing responsibilities with Jamie Hitel. Winner of six First Prize awards in major national and international organ competitions, he enjoys an active career as a concert organist and private organ instructor alongside his work at Christ Church.
