Artists Request for Natural Temporary Artwork Submissions for 2021 Cemetery Tour

Arts & the Spirit at Christ Church Greenwich hosts an annual cemetery tour in October.  This year we plan to sponsor the creation of a temporary art installation situated next to the cemetery at Christ Church to augment the serenity of the cemetery grounds and represent a visual reminder of the beauty of the cycle of life from creation to return to the natural elements it was born from.  Genesis 3:19: You are dust and to dust you will return.

Temporary Art Installation Guidelines:

We are looking for a creation that is derived from nature and will naturally return (biodegrade/disintegrate) to the earth within 10 months but can “disappear” as quickly as 30 days.

The piece should be 3 dimensional and inspire a way to commune with God.

The art installation will be placed beside the cemetery behind the annex.  Space is limited – 10’ by 10’.  The base cannot exceed the square footage of the art location; however, it can be as tall at the artist is inspired while remaining safe from toppling over on viewers.

The installation has to be completed by the Artist and their staff/volunteers.  It cannot require resources from the Christ Church Staff.

The winning proposal will receive an award of $1000 and $500 to cover materials.

Criteria for Being selected

  • There should be a compelling religious insight/story to installation.   It can be inspired by anything spiritual.
  • Artwork should have merit as a work of art, independent of other considerations.
  • The installation should enhance the public’s experience of the cemetery at Christ Church.
  • The exhibition should be an opportunity to expose the public to diverse artists and artistic styles.

  • The artwork should be able to withstand unprotected display in an outdoor environment and be able to be maintained by the artist throughout the public display period should there require any additional support after the primary installation.

  • The installation must not present a safety hazard. It must comply with all applicable building codes and disability access requirements.
  • The installation cannot require the pruning or cutting of shrubs or trees adjacent to the installation.
  • Installation cannot include any invasive species plants such as oriental bittersweet. See the full list for CT here.
  • The proposed installation will be evaluated for feasibility, with convincing evidence of the artist’s ability to mount the installation as proposed. Factors to be considered include, but are not limited to, timeline, the artist’s experience, soundness of materials. The proposed installation must not impede the typical uses around the site such as walking between buildings.
  • Artist is responsible for all costs associated with the installation, including travel to and from Christ Church for the installation.
  • Artist is asked to attend the Cemetery Tour and Art installation for the “grand” reveal on October 3rd, and to receive their $1000 Award. (Note: the $500 materials stipend will be granted at the time of awarding the project to the artist.)
