Looking through Palms to Altar

Palm Sunday, April 5

10:00 am | Liturgy of the Palms & Holy Eucharist, via livestream

The Palm Sunday liturgy recalls and re-enacts Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. In the ancient Near East, it was customary to cover in some way the path of someone thought worthy of the highest honor, and the gospels recount bystanders’ laying their cloaks and palms before Jesus as he entered the city. On Palm Sunday, the celebrant blesses our palms and the clergy carry them in procession, singing “All glory, laud, and honor.” This celebratory mood quickly turns, as the gospel lesson recounts Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, trial, crucifixion, and death. The Rev. Dr. Cheryl McFadden will preach.

Following the Eucharist, all appointments and linens are stripped from the altar and chancel, recalling the soldier’s dividing Christ’s garments amongst themselves, while the choir chants Psalm 22: “My God, my God… why hast thou forsaken me?” The Rev. 12:00 noon | Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday, via livestream

Good Friday is the starkest and most solemn day of the year, as we remember and reflect upon Our Lord’s crucifixion. The church decorations have been removed the previous evening, and the altar is bare; only a large wooden cross stands before the altar. The story of Christ’s passion, according to St. John, is chanted by the choir, and meditations on Our Lord’s seven last words are given. Prayers are offered for the church, the world, the suffering, the unconverted, and the departed. Finally, the cross is venerated, before all depart in silence. The Rector will preach.

7:30 pm | The Great Vigil & First Eucharist of Easter, via livestream

The Great Vigil begins at sundown on Holy Saturday, when the Easter fire—representing Our Lord’s triumph over darkness and death—is kindled. From this fire, the Paschal candle is lit; this candle will be lit throughout Eastertide, remaining in the church near the pulpit, and throughout the coming year at baptisms and funerals, reminding all that Christ is “light and life.” Following the Exsultet (or Easter proclamation), the story of salvation is heard in readings from the Old and New Testaments. Finally the Easter acclamation is given, as the celebrant proclaims, “Alleluia! Christ is risen!” The lights come up, Gloria in excelsis is sung, and the service continues with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The Rev. Terry Elsberry will preach.
