An influence I will carry with me wherever I go – Alice Belshaw answers Why Christ Church?

When you sign up for choir you are also signing up for new friendships. Everyone is there for the same reason which is our love for music!

Hi! My name is Alice Belshaw and I’m in the ninth grade at Greenwich High School. My family has been coming to Christ Church Greenwich for almost ten years, and I’ve been a member of the St. Cecilia Choir of Girls for seven of those years now.

When I was younger, I always loved singing, and my parents and music teacher at school wanted me to continue singing as I grew up. Finally, after lots of convincing, I joined the St. Nicholas Choir in second grade with a few friends, and then moved up to the girls choir the following year.

When you sign up for choir you are also signing up for new friendships. Everyone is there for the same reason which is our love for music! We also get to do amazing things together like singing in some of the most famous cathedrals in the world and exploring the streets of Europe.

I’ve learned so much about the church and my faith through singing in the choir that I’ve been able to apply the good to my life. I’ve found myself doing this more without even realizing it. Last summer, I went on a biking trip with a group of people my age, and none of us knew each other when we first started out. One of the girls in the group arrived an hour later than everyone else. When she first walked up, I remember seeing how worried she looked, and how she could already tell that we had all bonded and she was behind. I immediately knew that we had to make her feel welcomed into the group. I introduced myself, and invited her to sit in the seat next to me on the bus. I could tell that something so small, could make so much of a difference, and as the trip went on, she became one of the best friends I made over those two short weeks. To this day, I’m still in contact with her.

Christ Church is also full of different learning opportunities. A few years ago when the organization World Vision came to Christ Church, I was inspired to sponsor a child from the small country Lesotho in Southern Africa. Ever since, I had wanted to be able to travel to Africa one day to meet the people there and experience their lives on the opposite side of the world.

This past summer I was able to do that when I joined my school in their annual service trip to Rwanda to work on a school building project similar to what Christ Church is doing in Tanzania. While we were there, we had the chance to attend a local church service where they sang a hymn that we often sing here. They sang Come Thou Fount in their language, Kinrwandan. This was amazing to hear because even though I was on the other side of the world, it felt like I was back here at Christ Church sitting in the choir stalls.

By getting involved here, I’ve discovered how important Christ Church is in my life and how it has made such a big impact on my faith and made me better person. Christ Church has been a great influence on my life that I will carry with me wherever I go.
