John the Baptist Window

This stunning and often overlooked window was created by Heaton, Butler & Bayne studio in London, England around 1910.  It is given in memory of Luke Aolphus Lockwood, 1833 - 1905.  The inscription on the window is, “Upright man.  Churman and Mason.  Present by his Lodge, Acacia #85.”

In addition to showing John the Baptist in his well known clothing of camel hair and pointing to the heavens acknowledging the Light of Jesus, there are several Masonic symbols in the window.  At the top, a triangle and a compass are visible; behind these , there is an open book.  At the bottom, there are various instruments, among them a plumb-bob and a thermometer, and a triangle.  (The Windows of Christ Church by William E. Van Brunt, Jr.)

Almighty God, by whose providence thy servant John the Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Savior by preaching repentance; Make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth’s sake; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
